Weekdays are filled with work and chores but come the weekend, it’s time to switch off and go green. Nature offers a natural boost to your mental and physical well-being by rejuvenating your mind and body. You may not realise it amongst the Netflix marathons but humans are naturally drawn to nature. Now if you’ve been viewing your TV more often than the lush green outdoors, the below should be just enough to get you out of that rut.
1. Stress Relief
The term, ‘Green exercise’ is a real thing which has been scientifically proven to reduce stress. Head for the trees and immerse yourself in a green environment – think vast parks and big green forests. Some exposure to nature will leave you feeling amazing by reducing heart rate and fatigue as well as lifting your mood. Nature has also been proven to boost levels of serotonin and lower cortisol levels, plus the presence of water enhances these positive effects too.
2. Mental Recharge
After an intense week at work, you may start to notice that you’re suffering from mental fatigue i.e. the feeling when your brain comes to a complete halt. One way to curb this condition is to restore your mind through exposure to the outdoors. Rather than reaching for a caffeine-induced pick-me-up, get outdoors and fuel up the natural way.
3. Vitamin D Absorption
You’ve heard it many time before but venturing outside is the perfect way to get your daily dose of Vitamin D, you need strong bones to survive after all. The best source of vitamin D is natural sunlight, so skip the supplements and get back to nature. You only need 10-15 minutes of sun per day and direct exposure to your abdomen or back is best for effective vitamin absorption.
4. Improved Health & Fitness
With the business of the working week, it’s not uncommon to fall behind during Monday - Friday. Start off by incorporating two thirty minute outdoor walks per weekend, then try to squeeze a few in on your lunch break or before or after work. Skip the treadmill and take it outside, it won’t even feel like a workout when you’re breathing in the fresh air and basking in the scenery that the outdoors has on offer.
5. Reduces inflammation
Studies have shown that people who spend time in the forest has lower levels of inflammation than those who spent time in the city. Inflammation in the body can often go into overdrive, particularly as it’s our body’s natural response to threats like damage (a bruise) and pathogens (cold or flu).
